When Volkswagen wanted to build a SEMA show car capable of backing up its aggressive looks with real performance, they turned to the team that knows VWG platforms inside and out, RacingLine.
Built using a complete package of RacingLine Performance Hardware and OEM+ Software, the Volkswagen GLI Performance Concept became far more than just a showpiece. This was a fully engineered, track-ready build designed to showcase exactly what’s possible when factory engineering meets motorsport development.
“RacingLine Hardware and Software was the natural choice for the project, given our Volkswagen Motorsport roots and our full catalog of performance components.”
Working closely with Volkswagen of America, our technical team helped specify a complete suite of upgrades to ensure the GLI had the power, braking performance, and chassis capability to match its wide-body motorsport-inspired styling.
From there, RacingLine’s hardware and software engineers travelled to Volkswagen of America’s Technical Centre in Detroit to support the full vehicle build, install our OEM+ calibration, and complete extensive dyno testing.
The result? A seriously capable EA888-powered GLI producing up to 350bhp thanks to a combination of RacingLine’s R600 Intake, Turbo Inlet, Performance Intercooler, IS38 turbo upgrade, and OEM+ Software calibration.
But power alone was never the goal.
To ensure the drivetrain could handle repeated hard use, the build also featured RacingLine’s Oil Management System, Uprated Engine Mounts, and front-mounted Oil Cooler kit to keep temperatures controlled both on the road and during track sessions.
Once the mechanical package was complete, Volkswagen’s Design Center California transformed the GLI into a modern touring car-inspired concept, taking clear inspiration from iconic ‘90s race cars with aggressive wide arches, revised aerodynamics, and a much more purposeful stance.
Underneath the widened bodywork sits a complete track-focused chassis setup featuring RacingLine’s Stage 3+ Carbon Ceramic Big Brake Kit alongside TrackSport Coilover Suspension to keep the chassis sharp, composed, and confidence-inspiring on circuit.
“Nothing but the best performance upgrades for Volkswagen themselves!”
The Technical Story
Starting with Volkswagen’s EA888 Gen 3 engine, RacingLine developed a complete IS38 turbo-based performance package engineered to dramatically improve airflow, cooling, and power delivery.
To remove the factory intake restrictions, the build features RacingLine’s R600 Carbon Fibre Cold-Air Intake alongside the Turbo Inlet Hose, Turbo Elbow, and Turbo Muffler Delete. Supporting the increased airflow is RacingLine’s high-capacity Performance Intercooler, helping maintain lower intake temperatures under load.
To maximise the setup safely and reliably, RacingLine’s OEM+ Software calibration was developed specifically around the IS38 turbo upgrade, increasing output to an impressive 350 HP and 372 ft lbs of torque while still retaining the factory catalyst for emissions compliance.
For additional thermal protection during hard driving and track use, the GLI was also fitted with RacingLine’s Oil Cooler and Oil Management System, reducing the risk of oil starvation during sustained high-G cornering.
Power is sent through the factory 6-speed transmission paired with an upgraded performance clutch package, ensuring the drivetrain remains capable under increased load.
Stopping power was equally important.
To handle repeated high-speed braking, RacingLine equipped the GLI with its Stage 3+ 6-piston forged caliper Big Brake Kit featuring massive 380mm Carbon Ceramic rotors, delivering the kind of braking performance normally reserved for dedicated motorsport applications.
To make sure the chassis could fully exploit the increased power and braking capability, the build also received RacingLine’s TrackSport Coilover Suspension system.
Developed directly from RacingLine’s motorsport experience, the TrackSport setup combines race-inspired engineering with real-world usability. Features include inverted thick-stem front dampers, lightweight aluminium bodies, coilover rear spring and damper configuration, 60mm linear springs with helper springs, and fully adjustable solid top mounts.
The result is a suspension package equally at home on fast road builds or serious track day cars.
To further sharpen the chassis, RacingLine’s full suite of underbody braces was installed to improve rigidity, reduce subframe deflection under load, and maintain accurate suspension geometry during aggressive cornering.
Visually, the GLI Performance Concept pushes the touring car inspiration even further.
Based on a 2022 6-Speed Jetta GLI, the concept features widened front and rear fenders with integrated venting, larger side skirts, a custom front bumper with enlarged grilles, and a redesigned rear bumper with a more aggressive lower valance framing the twin-exit sports exhaust.
Finishing the exterior are Rotiform® Forged GRZ Monoblock wheels measuring 20”x9.5” complete with custom AERODISC covers and wrapped in high-performance road and track-focused summer tyres to maximise grip.
To simplify wheel changes during track use, RacingLine’s Wheel Stud and Nut Conversion Kit was also installed.
Inside, the motorsport-inspired theme continues with a pair of Recaro® Pole Position ABE seats finished in custom ‘Texagon’ upholstery, helping keep both driver and passenger firmly supported during spirited driving sessions.
Our billet shift knob completes the interior perfectly, adding the final touch to one of the most exciting modern VWG concept builds we’ve ever been part of.
